Transverse Relaxation of Cu Nuclear Spins in YBa_2Cu_3O_<6.98>

We have measured the transverse relaxation of the planar C[[(2) nuclear spins in anoriented powder sample of YBa.Cu.O,...,. (T.=92 K) by using the nuclear quadrupoleresonance (NQR) technique. Above T., after subtraction of tlte T, process, the spinecho envelope decay follows a'Gausstan form, and its time constant is almost xndependent of temperature. In the vicinity of T., however, the Gaussian line shape is gradu-ally narrowed. The calculated value (7',=149qsecx) for the (iaussian time constantbased on the direct nuclear dipole-dipole interaction is compax'able to the experimental one (7'.= 131 f2qsec) at 297 K. Hence, the nuclear indirect coupling proposedpreviously may not be needed. Below T., the Gaussian line sha)'>e was found to be nar-rowed depending on H, and especially, it is sharply narrowecl at 35 K and 87 K.
