The d Orbital Character in the Spin-Peierls System NaV_2O_5

"V NMR rneasurenuents in the uniform state of NaVzO5 are presented. The NIVIR shift andthe electrical field gradient (EFG) xvere meastmred at the tetravalent V sites. Observed anisotropyof the NIVIR shift and the EFG indicates that the d..-like orbital is occtrpied. It has been foundthat the orbital susceptibility in the trniform state is significantly stnaller than the residualsusceptibility in the spin-Peierls state. The possible origins of this disagreement are discussed.
