^<51>V NMR Study in the Paramagnetic State of LaVO_3

The magnetic susceptibility (X) and the "V Knight shift (K) measurements are performed onthe perovskite L2lLV03 in the paramagnetic state. By analyzing the A-X diagram, independentcontributions of spin and orbital susceptibilities to the observed one are determined experimen-tally. The spin susceptibility was fotrnd to be suppressed from the Curie-Weiss law for S = 1spins well above the Neel temperature. It was also found that the layperfine coupling constantfor d spin is largely redttced from the usual core-polarization contribution. The analysis basedon a local-rnornent rnodel shows that this reduction rnay be caused by a large transferred hyper-fine coupling between the neighboring V" tons rather than by covalency with O' ions. Thisaccounts for all the NMR data rather quantitatively, though, the sign and the magnitude of thetransferred hyperfine field are not cornpatible with any existing microscopic theories.
