Observation of a Spin Gap in MgV_2O_5 from High Field Magnetization Measurements

Powder samples of 1VIgVzO5, which has a structure sirnilar to a spin ladder counpound CaV3O5,xvere synthesized and the magnetic properties were investigated. The tnagnetic strsceptibilitysltows a broad maximuuaa around 100 K and below about 15 K, it decreases 111010 rapidly withdecreasing teunperattmre. The magnetization ctrrves in high fields up to l7T at 1,5K and 3OTat 1.7 K show a change of slope around H. x l2.5T, which can be considered to be a transitionfrozn a singlet ground state to a gapless taaagnetic state. The excitation gap A is evaluatedas A/kp x 17K in agreement with the energy gap of about 2rneV frona the inelastic nevrtronscattering. The results strongly suggest that IVIgVzOs is a spin ladder systern with a spin gap.
