High Field Magnetization Process of an S=1 One-Dimensional Antiferromagnet NENP

High field magnetization measuremernts have been performed for NENP at low fern-peratures in steady fields up to 12 T autd in pulsed fields up to 40 T. The unagnetizationfor both directions parallel and perpendicular to tl?e cltain axis is extremely small inlow' fields and increases abruptly above tlte critical field 73j=9.8f0.2T and#"=13.1:O.3T. This result indicates that tlte ground state of NENP is non-magnetic, that is, singlet and becomes magnetic above the critical field due to tltecrossover between tire singlet and ntaguaetic excited states, consistent wzitla ]-Ialdane'sprediction. The magnetization data are analyzed on the basis of the Tsvelik tlteory.The two gaps and the single-ion anisotropy constant are estixnated to beE.= 14.2S0.3 K, E.=26.S" 1.8 K and D:7 K. Using the values of L'. and E., thellaldane gap for D=O is evaluated to be E.= (0.39 'f 0.2) l J l. This value is in goodagreentent witla the estimation of the Haldane gap from the Monte Cargo simulation.The Tsvelik theory satisfactorily explains the field dependence of the xnagnetizationfor NENP.[magnetization, low dimensional xmagnet, Haldane gap, high magnetic field, ll Ni (C,H.N.).NO.(CIO.)l
