ESR of "the Magnetic Dangling Bond"in the Haldane State

The unique singlet ground state of an .5:l one-dinaension?tl anti['errorn?tgnet is studied trsingthe ESR measurenaents on NENP, Ni(C3HgN3)zNOz(CIO,j). The pure crystal is BSR insentitivein its ground state, reflecting a nonmagnetic nature of the Haldane state. The addition ofthe nonrnagnetic Zn" iraaptrrities, however, naakes the system ESR sensitive, giving an angle-dependent ESR spectrttm. A new interpretation is proposed that the observed signals are dvre tothe SmX/2 broken valence bond which is strb.jected to the field-induced staggered internal fieldsoriginating frorn the underlying antiferromagnetic polarization.
