Magnetization Plateaus in NH_4CuCl_3

The magnetic strsceptibility and high-field uaaagnetization process of NH,jCuCl3 with doublechains of CuCl3 have been uneastrred trsing single crystals. No ano?aaaly indicative of the three-dirnensional ordering is observed in strsceptibility data above 1.7 K. It is fotrnd, by znagnetizationrneasureraaent doxvn to 0.5 K, that in contrast to KCuCl3 and TlCtrCl3, NHjCuCl3 has a gaplessmagnetic grotrnd state at zero field. It is observed that the tnagnetization ctzrve has two pJateatzsat one-quarter and three-quarters of the sattrration taaagnetization, irrespective of the externalfield direction. The origin of the plateatrs is attributed not to the unagnetic anisotropy, but to theqttanttnm effect. The relation lcetween the plateatts and the period of the spin state is disctrssedin terms of a recent theory presented by Oshikawa et at. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 78 (1997) 1984].
