Magnetic Anisotropy of Ca_3Co_2O_6 with Ferromagnetic Ising Chains

Ilvlagnetic properties of Ca3Co30(; with f'erronaagnetic Ising chains have been sttrdied trsingoriented saznple along tlae chain direction. Frorn the extremely anisotropic behavior in its uaaagnetization at loxv tetaaperatures and in tlae tenaperattrre dependence of magnetic strsceptibility,34it is strggested that an octahedral Co us nonrnagnetic, whereas a trigonal prisnaatic Co" hasa fictitiotrs spin .5' : l xvith large single-ion anisotropy (D x -25K,.q77 x 4). At IOXV fernperatures below 5 K, rnultisteps are observed in the magnetization, strggesting the existence ofvarious magnetic strttcttrres. The ptulsed taaagnetization uaaeastrretnents reveal that the responseof' ferromagnetic chains to the field is slow and varies as a ftrnction of temperattrre and AH/At.
