Birefringence Study on Structural and Magnetic Phase Transitions pf RbMnBr_3

The temperature dependence of birefringence A n (T ) of a triangular lattice antiferromagnet RbMnBr, has been measured together with comparative measurements ofAn's of related compounds CsMgCl., CsMgBr, RbMgBr., CsMnI., CsMnBr,. Astructural phase transition of RbMnBr, at T..=22O K with symmetry-breaking in thehexagonal c-plane has been found. The low-temperature structure below T.. is suggested as orthorhombic, which can be the origin of an incommensurate spin structureof RbMnBr,. Critical exponents of magnetic specific heat are determined asa'=0.22f0.06, cx=0.42"0.16, which are in fair agreement with the values of theZ. X S, universality class.[triangular lattice antiferromagnet, incommensurate spin structure, chirality, lj birefringence, structural phase transition, RbMnBr.l
