ESR in Hexagonal ABX_3 Type Antiferromagnets. II.KNiCl_3: Easy-Plane Anisotropy Case

We report the results of ESR and magnetic measurements on single crystals ofKNiC1, whose chemical unit cell at room temperature is described by enlarging that ofCsNiCl. to 8 a, 8 a, c, containing three - NiCl. - chains (two on the A-site andone on the B-site). The intrachain exchange interaction constant was estimated to beJ./ k.= - 15 K. The magnetic anisotropy was found to be the easy-plane type andD/k.= -0.86K. Three-dimensional ordering occurs at T.=S.2K. In the orderedstate an ESR mode which is unexplainable in terms of the usual two-sublattice modelwas observed. Introducing two kinds of interchain exchange interactions, J';' andJ';', and taking six sublattices, we investigate the normal modes for the motions ofthe sublattice magnetizations. The frequency-field diagram calculated withJ';'/k.= -1.3Xl0 'K and J';'/k.= -1.1X10 'K is in good agreement with theexperimental one.
