First-Order Valance Transition of EuPd_2Si_2 Induced by High Magnetic Fields

In order to stttdy the magnetic field effects on the intermediate valence of the Eu systern,magnetization was measured for EuPdzSiz and Bu(Pdg.g5Ptg.g5)zSiz up to 100 T. A first-ordermetamagnetic transition was observed for both samples under high magnetic fields. The transi-tion field is 93T for EuPdzSix at 6 K. The saturation magnetization close to 7#B indicates thatthis metamagnetism is a field-induced valence transition frorn an internaediate valence state toa divalent state of the Etm ion. Based on the interconfigtmrational fluctuation (ICF) model, theexcitation energy to convert an Eu" ion into Etr" was estirnated. Temperature Dependence ofthe metamagnetic transition field of EuPdzSiz was also studied.
