New Inorganic Spin-Peierls Compound NaV_2O_5 Evidenced by X-Ray and Neutron Scattiring

In this letter we report lattice dirnerization and spin-gap formation of NaVzO5 below its spinPeierls transition temperatture T.. :: 35.3 K, in which there are V" (,S' ::: 1 /2) linear chains alongthe b axis of its orthorhombic structture. A single-crystal X-ray scattering experirnent shoxvssuperlattice reflections with a lattice naodtrlation vector q :IC: (172, 172, 1/4). Inelastic neutronscattering from a powder sample at T :: 7 K clearly den?onstrates a gap energy of 9.8 meV at ascattering vector IQI ::: l.0A " corresponding to the reciprocal lattice point (1,1/2,0).
