Electronic Structure of the Quasi Two-Dimensional Mott System BaCo_<1-x>Ni_xS_2

By rneans of neutron powder difl'raction on antiferrornagnetic samples of BaCo) .Ni.S3, thespin structure has been determined. The magnitudes of the ordered moments are x 2.9p3 at 10 Kfor x : 0.0 and x l.7#B at 100 K for x : 0.175. The restrlts are not compatible with the electronucconfigtrration (3d..x .2)"", which was previotrsly assumed to explain the physical behavior ofthe system. Instead, the configuration seems to be (3d.. or 3d..)"(3d3.n .x)'(3d.z .2)" 111BaCoS.>. Each Xi atom substituted for Co adds one electron to this system. Based on this basicpicture of the electronic structtrre, variotrs physical properties of BaCoj .Ni.S,z ever ptrblishedare disctrssed.
