Observation of Magnetic and Structural Phase Transition in CsFeS_2

Both neutron diffraction and M6ssbauer investigation reveal that CsFeS.remains paramagnetic down to 70 K, at which a sudden first order magnetic andstructural phase transition takes place. Antiferromagnetic coupling of spins bothalong the c-axis and along the diagonal direction in the a-b plane of the orthor-hombic crystal structure of the high temperature phase accounts best for theobserved low temperature neutron diffraction data. M6ssbauer parametersdetermined over the temperature range from 4.2 K to room temperature indicatethat the iron in CsFeS. is in a ferric state having large covalent bonding to sulfurligands. The measured hyperfine field of 193.010.1 k0e at 4.2 K is a quite reducedvalue compared with those of other high spin ferric compounds.
