Behavior of the Transverse Spin Component in the Short-Range Ising Spin-Glass Fe_<0.5>Mn_<0.5>TiO_3

The spin-glass Fe..,Mn..,Ti0, (7'..=21.5 K) has been studied by low-field dc-magnetization, neutron scattering and M6ssbauer measurements. The results ob-tained by the magnetization and neutron scattering rneasurements indicate that onlythe longitudinal spin compo?aent freezes below T... This fact shows thatFe..,Mn..,Ti0, behaves as a typical Ising spin-glass in both oj' the measurements.However, the hyperfine fields #j( at Fe nuclei obser'ved by the M6ssbauer measure-ment point to directions other than the hexagonal c-axis in the spin-glass state. This in-dicates that the transverse spin component contributes to H.. as cloes the longitudinalone. Combining the results obtained by the three methods, it is concluded that thetransverse spin components fluctuate rather incoherently with one another with char-7acteristic times longer than our M6ssbauer time scale of - 10 s.[Ising spin-glass, transverse spin component, M6ssbauer effect, dc-magnetiza- lj tion, neutron scatteringl
