Far-Infrared Absorption by Small Particles of YBa_2Cu_3O_<6.74>

The presence of the superconducting energy gap, 2A, in YB3[2CU.06,. has been ob-served directly at 45 f 5 cm ' and at 1.6 K by far-infrared absorption measurementsin small particles embedded randomly in a polyethylene film. Tl?is result indicates thatthe gap has the minimum of 271 ,.,. : 0.7 kT., and thus the gap is: finite along any direclion in the crystal. Transverse effective charges associated with polar optical phononsat l 44, 280, and 3 I 5 cm ' increase by a factor of 4 - 5 upon a decrease in the tempera-lure from 295 K to 1.6 K, suggesting the presence c>f an anomalous electron-phononcoupling in this material.
