Formation of Glassy Pd-Ni-P Alloys by Mechanical Alloying and Their Structure and Thermal Stability

This paper reviews the recent researches whether or not the application of mechanical alloying to metallic alloys causes a glassy structure defined by the distinct appearance of glass transition and supercooled liquid region before crystallization. The amorphous phase in Pd_<48>Ni_<32>P_<20> alloy produced by mechanical alloying of a pre-alloyed ingot consisting of Pd_5P_2 and Ni_3P phases was found to exhibit distinct glass transition, followed by the appearance of a wide supercooled liquid region and then crystallization. Based on these data, it has been concluded that the mechanical alloying method is useful for the formation of glassy metallic materials, in addition to the preparation of amorphous materials without glass transition and nonequilibrium crystalline phases.
