Raman Scattering by Ethylenediamines in Quasi-One-Dimensional Mixed-Valence Complexes [M (en)_2][Pt (en)_2Cl_2](ClO_4)_4(M=Pt,Pd,en=ethylenediamine)

We have studied the effect of the order-disorder transition of the orientation ofperchlorate (C10j ) ions on the vibrational modes of ethylenediamine(NH.CH.CH.NH.) in [M(en).][Pt(en).C1z](CIO.)., where en is ethylenediamine andM = Pt or Pd ion, by means of Raman spectroscopy. Upon the transition into the or-dered phase, the spectra due to the CH stretching modes split into two groups on ac-count of the difference in the coordination sites of Pt(II)[Pd(II)] and Pt(IV). The spec-Crab separation between the two groups is about 20 cm at 270 K. On the other hand,the NH stretching and the NCCN skeleton modes exhibit no splitting. These results indicate that the protons of the methylene (Cl.) group of the ethylenediamine have astrong interaction with the internal motion of the perchlorate ions which bind theCDW chains.[Raman scattering, ethylenediamine, one-dimensional mixed-valence, per- ]I chlorate, order-disorder transitionll
