Anharmonicity of Low Frequency Lattice Vibrations in Red-HgI_2

The Raman scattering spectra in the layer compound red-Hgl. have beenmeasured in detail under hydrostatic pressure. Interatomic force'constants arededuced from the data on the basis of a simple Born-von Kirman model to esti-mate the harmonic frequency of the infrared active AJ(TO) mode. The frequencyis found to be considerably smaller than the experimental value at low pressures.This discrepancy is attributed to the shift due to the quartic anharmonicityassociated with the shear potential of a Hg-I bond. Its harmonic force constantincreases rapidly with increasing pressure, so that the f.3(TO) mode becomesrather harmonic at high pressures. The anharmonicity due to the change in crystalvolume is also discussed in relation to the pressure dependence of the interlayerinteraction between iodines. Our experiinental results show that the effectivesize of iodine tons decreases with increasing pressure.
