Low Temperature Powder Neutron Diffraction Studies of CsFeS_2

Polarized neutron powder diffraction and high resolution powder neutrondiffraction measurements with the unpolarized beam were performed in an at-tempt to determine the low temperature magnetic and crystal structure of CsFeS..The results of the measurements reveal that the magnetic and the crystal structureof the low temperature phase as well as the transition behavior depend stronglyon the state of the internal stress of the sample. Using a powder sample of thestress free as-grown fine crystallites, we determine the low temperature crystalstructure as a triclinic one with lattice parameters at T=4O K as a=7.08 A,Z>::l2.05A, c=5.47k,<x=96.6', /7=10O.9', 7=88.5'. The results also suggestthat the observed transition may be viewed as that of the Spin-Peierls singlet tothe N<Set state, which accompanies the simultaneous structural transformation.
