Structural Studies on the Phase Transition of La_3Ni_2O_<6.92> at about 550 K

• Structural sttrdies of La3NizO.3.g3 with a double layered perovskite strttcture have been per-formed by the X-ray Rietveld ?tnalyses between 300 K and 650 K. The interatornic distancebetween Ni and the apical oxygen (on the otrtside of NiOz dotuble layer) rapidly increases aroundthe phase-transition terrtperature T3 N 550 K with decreasing temperature. Then, the energy ofthe (38' - r') band is considered to shift downwards with respect to that of the (.11" - y') band withdecreasing temperature and the lower Hvrbbard band of the former becounes to be (almost) fullyoccupied at the transition ternperature, which induces the Mott transition (delocalized-localizedtransition) of the (3z' - r') electrons.
