On the Magnetic Properties of Systems with Low Dimensional Linkage of VO_5 Pyramids

[N(CH3),j]V3O7, (811)2ZIlV6O14 (en-::ethylenediatnine) and (C6H]4N2)V601.4-H20 xvith edge-sharing V05 chains have been prepared hydrother?aaaIly and sttrdied by naagnetic strsceptibilityrneastzrezments and by NIVIR. Observed ttaagnetic properties, xvhich itudicate the existence of thespin gap, can be explained toy a rnodel of isolated spin dirtaers of V" ions, where a very largeexchange interaction J exists only betxveen the electrons at V sites xvithin txvo edge-sharing V05pyrarnids xvhose apical oxygens are on the sanue side of the basal planes. It can be tznderstoodby considering the kinetic exchange utaechanisum acting betxveen the electrons in the xy orbitals.
