Raman Scattering in the Inorganic Spin-Peierls System α'-Na_<1-δ>V_2O_5

We have stttdied the srin-Peierls (SP) transition in cv'-Na? .5V205 (c5 = O, 0.01 and 0.1) byl11C8.I1S of Ranaan scattering. At roona ternperattmre, we observe six An and three Ax phononmodes and a broad Raman band. Beloxv 'Z'SP severatl nexv peaks ?tnd a new broad band appear.Tlae new peak at 62 Clll ' originates frotaa the SP-gap excitation. Tlae new peak at 128 cnn '-1and the new broad band between 130 atad 400 cna COIIIO frorta txvo tnagnetic excitations. Thenew peaks at 102, 646 and 944 cna ' are assigned to the f'olded phonon taaodes and their Na"-ion deficiency dependence shoxvs that the defect of Na" ion stmjcpresses the SP transition. Thepolarized Rarauan spectra below 'lsr suggest that the possilcle crystal syrnxaaetry is C:(Pn) orCJ (PI). The asymunetric lineshape of the 531-Clll ' peak superitaaposed on the electronic Rarnanband from the d-d transition arotnnd 600 CITI ' is interpreted in tertns of the Fano resonancebetxveen the electronic contintnotts band and the phonon with a finite lif'etiuaae. Tlae defects of theNa" ions redtnce the Fano effect becatrse the lifetirne of the phonon and the phonon-contintrttminteraction are decreased.
