Direct Observation of the Multiple Spin Gap Excitations in Two-Dimensional Dimer System SrCu_2(BO_3)_2

Variotrs spin-gap excit?ttions hax'e been obserxxed in the txvo-ditaaensional diuaaer systeunSrCtrz (B03)2 Icy [811.. The zero-field energy gap of' the loxvest spin-gap excitation shoxvs a splitting into txvo triplet naodes and tlae energy sjclitting clearly depends on the taaagnetic field orienCation. A zero-field sjclitting is also f'otruad betxveen the .S'. : $1 atad .S'. : -l branches of' eaclatriplet. These behaviors are qtualitatively explained by consider'ing the anisotrojcic inter-diraaerand intra-dinaer exchange cotujolings. The averaged valtue of' the lowest spin-gap energy is deterutained to 1.ce 722H2GHz (34.7K). XN'e have also fotrnd 21 second spin-gap excitation at ll4OGHz(54.7 K), which indicates that tlae inte?'-ditaaer cotrpling is strong. Besides tlaese raaodes, 21 nttuaaberof' ga'tpped ESR absorptions are f'otrnd and xve propose Chart these excitations are catused by thelocalized nattrre of' tlae excited state in the preserat systetaa.
