Sugar-oxidizing Respiratory Chain of Gluconobacter suboxydans. Evidence for a Branched Respiratory Chain and Characterization of Respiratory Chain-Linked Cytochromes(Microbiology & Fermentation Industry)

Gluconobacter suboxydans has a highly active respiratory chain which oxidizes several sugars and sugar alcohols. The results of this study indicate that the sugar-oxidizing respiratory chain consists of ubiquinone, several cytochromes c and a cytochrome o. The respiratory chain was shown to contain at least five cytochromes, including two cytochromes c associated with alcohol or aldehyde dehydrogenase, two cytochromes c that react with carbon monoxide and a single cytochrome o, some of which were characterized in this study. Furthermore, several lines of evidence suggest that the respiratory chain branchs at the site of ubiquinone with KCN-sensitive and -insensitive terminal oxidases, which may correspond to cytochrome o oxidase and an alternative oxidase consisting of a possible cytochrome c, respectively.
