Magnified Observations of the Intestinal Mucosa

Before and after dispersal of glucose, aminoacid and fat solutions, the intestinal mucosa was observed by a magnifying endoscope, dissecting microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Minimal changes were observed after dispersal of 5% glucose, 20% sucrose and 10% artificial fat solutions, while, moderate to severe changes in shape, color and surface epithelium were recognized after disperasl of 12% aminoacid and 20% glucose solutions. These differences in the changes were thought to be caused not only by the characteristic differences in the solutions but also by the differences in osmotic pressure of the solutions. In intestinal examinations, dissecting microscopes and SEM can be used concomitantly with observations by the magnifying endoscope.
