In our previous report, N-benzoyl-1-tyrosyl paraaminobenzoic acid (B.T. PABA) was introduced as a new substrate for the pancreatic exocrine function test and it was suggested that the substrate could be used for a new absorption test material in postgastrectomy patients and in other G. I. tract diseases. In this paper, the results of control studies and the digestion disorders in Billroth I and II type postgastrectomy patients evaluated with B.T. PABA are reported. Eight healthy volunteers were tested, and the 6-hour recovery rate of PABA in urine was 76±6% (M±S. D.). The PABA excretion rate in Billroth I type postgastrectomy patients 8-14 days after surgery was 62±16% (M.±S. D.). PABA excretion values of Billroth II type postgastrectomy patients 10-14 days after surgery were 41±16% (M.±S. D.). A significant difference, P<0.05, was observed among the PABA excretion rate in controls and in Billroth I and Billroth II type postgastrectomy patients. According to these results, Billroth I type gastrectomy is throught to be better physiologically, than Billroth II and it is concluded that the B.T. PABA test can be used as a simple absorption test with reasonable reproducibility.
