Plasma Gastrin Response to Test Meal in Patients with Erosive Gastritis

Plasma gastrin levels were examined before and after a test meal in 14 patients with erosive gastritis who were diagnosed endoscopically. Plasma gastrin concentrations were determined by radioimmunoassay. Rather high integrated increments in plasma gastrin responses were observed in these patients, especially in endoscopically severe cases, when compared with normal subjects or patients with peptic ulcer without erosive gastritis. These data suggest that the gastrin-secreting cell mass is increased in patients with erosive gastritis and the existence of erosive gastritis does not disturb the gastrin release but rather facilitates it by increasing the sensitivity to such stimulation as a meal.
