B.T. PABA Test; Its use with Postgastrectomy Patients

N-benzoyl-L-tyrosyl-P-aminobenzoic acid (B.T. PABA) is a synthetic peptide which is specifically cleaved by chymotrypsin; the released P-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), as a tracer, is absorbed via the small intestine and excreted in the urine. Therefore, the excretion rate of PABA in the urine indirectly reflects chymotrypsin activity in the intestine. To evaluate its diagnostic value, this substrate has recently been tested for a new pancreatic function test in many institutes and hospitals. The authors tried to apply B.T. PABA to a new absorption test; the urinary excretion of PABA after its oral administration was examined in patients before and after partial gastrectomy. Recovery of PABA in the urine of preoperative patients was 80±10% (Mean±S. D.) and that of postgastrectomy patients was 41±16% (Mean±S. D.). The PABA excretion rate in patients with diarrhea after gastrectomy showed somewhat lower values than that in patients without diarrhea. This method of B.T. PABA administration may be useful as an absorption test in patients after gastrectomy or gastrointestinal tract operations.
