"Cloacogenic Carcinoma" of the Anorectal Junction : Light and Electron Microscopic Study of a Case

The diagnosis of "cloacogenic carcinoma" in this 66 year old female was based on the typical location of the tumor (anterior wall of the anorectal junction) and histologic features resembling basal cell carcinoma of the skin and transitional cell carcinoma. The tumor cells also contained foci of squamous cell differentiation including a few epithelial pearls. Our electron microscopic study showed intimate basement membranes and desmosomes which were consistent with glandular or transitional epithelium. Some similarities of this tumor with the normal transitional epithelium of the anterior anorectal junction are thought to justify the term "cloacogenic" carcinoma.
