B.T. PABA Test (Third Report) : A Pancreatic Exocrine Function Test

In our previous reports, the B.T. PABA test for postgastrectomy patients was introduced as a simple absorption test with reasonable reproducibility. In this study, the B.T. PABA test was performed as an exocrine pancreatic function test on patients with various gastrointestinal diseases such as ulcers, cholelithiasis and pancreatitis, and the results were as follows: 1) This test could be used on persons under 60 years old, and "normal" was over 70%. 2) There was no relation between gastroduodenal diseases and exocrine pancreatic function. 3) There was no significant difference between PABA excretion values in cholelithiasis patients and those in healthy volunteers. 4) There was also no significant difference between PABA excretion values in acute pancreatitis patients and those in controls. 5) The more severely the pancreatic duct changed in ERCP, the lower the PABA excretion value seemed to be. On the basis of the above results, the B.T. PABA test appears to be useful as a simple screening test of exocrine pancreatic function.
