Determination of the Absolute Values of Energy Density of Acoustoelectrically Built-Up Phonons in CdS by Brillouin Scattering

The Brillouin scattering intensity from acoustoelectrically built-up phonons in CdS has been directly compared with that from thermal transverse acoustic phonons at room temperature, and the absolute values of the energy density of built-up phonons have been determined without the necessity of estimating light losses and sensitivities in the sample and experimental systems. The experiments are done by using a refined Fabry-Perot interferometer, a sensitive photoelectric detector and a He-Ne laser operating at 632.8 nm. In the energy density of 1.5×10^<-4> J/cm^3 (bandwidth 276MHz), the growth rate of on-axis built-up phonons deviate from linearity. The maximum value of the energy density obtained in CdS is found to be about 10^<-2> J/cm^3.
