Mendelian Inheritance of Melanism in Pupae and Adults of the Adzuki Bean Borer, Ostrinia scapulalis (Lepidoptera : Crambidae)(Physiology, Biochemistry, Development and Genetics)

Melanic individuals were found in a laboratory colony of the adzuki bean borer Ostrinia scapulalis (Walker) collected in Japan. The melanism was expressed in adults and pupae of both sexes but not in larvae. A series of crossing experiments indicated that the melanism in O. scapulalis follows Mendelian inheritance as an autosomal recessive trait. The present results suggest a common regulatory mechanism for melanin deposition in the pupal and imaginal development of O. scapulalis.
