Continuous Ethanol Production by a Concentrated Culture of Flocculating Yeast

Saccharomyces cerevisiae TJ1 was isolated from Thai soil. The strain had rather high optimal temperature for growth and ethanol production, and an extremely high flocculating activity. Continuous culture for ethanol production was carried out using multi-vessel systems with cell recycle and a high productivity 30.1 g/l/h was obtained in a three vessel system. The effect of the recycle ratio in two vessel continuous culture on ethanol productivity was analysed by kinetic studies of growth and ethanol production and formulation of system equations. A suggestion of strain improvement for a high ethanol productivity was discussed.
