B-Type Cytochrome, an Electron Carrier in the Sulfite-Oxidation System of Thiobacillus thiooxidans

A B-type cytochrome was solubilized from the membrane of Thiobacillus thiooxidans by treatment with Nonidet P-40. It had absorption maxima at 426,530 and 558 nm in the reduced form. The heme of the cytochrome could be split off from the protein by the addition of acid-acetone. The spectrum of the alkaline pyridine ferrohemochrome prepared from the isolated protoheme was characterized by an α-peak at 556 nm. It was demonstrated that the cytochrome b is an intermediate carrier of electrons in the sulfite-oxidizing system in this organism.
