Inhibitory Action of Paraguayan Medicinal Plants on 5-Lipoxygenase

Extracts of 11 Paraguayan medicinal plants were examined for their inhibitory effects on the 5-lipoxygenase activity. The effects of methanol extracts of Elinorus latiflorus NEES (Espartillo guazu) and Ilex paraguariensis A. SANT.HIL (Yerba mate) were potent, and those of Aristolochia triangularis CHAM et SCHLEHT (Mil hombre) and Gomphrena perennis LINN (Siempre viva) were moderate. The activities of the water fractions II of the methanol extracts of A. triangularis and I. paraguariensis and the butanol fractions of the methanol extracts of Acanthospermum australe O.K. (Tapecue), E. latiflorus, Eugenia myrcianthes NIEDENZU (Yva hai), G. perennis and Phyllanthus orbiculatus RICHARD (Parapara-i) were moderate. The activities of the ethyl acetate fractions of I. paraguariensis, P. orbiculatus, E.latiflorus and G. perennis were very potent, of which the 5-lipoxygenase inhibitory activity of the ethyl acetate fraction of E. latiflorus was the most potent and comparable to that of phenidone, a typical 5-lipoxygenase inhibitor. An active fraction derived from the ethyl acetate fraction of E. latiflorus inhibited the 5-lipoxygenase activity in a concentration-dependent manner (IC_<50>, 3μg/ml).
