Acetone, MeOH, and water extracts of 90 natural medicines used in Vietnam were tested for their trypanocidal activity against epimastigotes of Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas' disease. Strong trypanocidal activity was found in the acetone extracts of 7 natural medicines, i.e. chan bau (Combretum quadrangulare), kho sam bac (Sophora flavescens), bay la mot hoa (Paris polyphylla), cao luong khuong (Alpinia galanga), hoac huong (Pogostemon cablin), man kinh tu (Vitex trifolia), thach hoc (Dendrobium nobile). l'-Acetoxychavicol acetate (1) and related phenylpropanoids were identified as the trypanocidal constituents of cao luong khuong.
