Essential Oil Composition of Hybrids and Amphidiploids of Japanese Wild Perilla

Essential oil composition of the F_1 and the amphidiploid plants of the Japanese wild species of Perilla was examined by GC/MS. The oil compositions of the amphidiploids were the same as those of their F_1 plants, and their essential oil chemotypes could be illustrated with the application of the genetic regulation system known among the cultivated species. An unexpected result observed was a marked increase of the linalool content in a hybrid plant between P. citriodora and P. setoyensis, and also in its amphidiploids. Small content of 4-terpineol and limonene, both of which are known to be biosynthesized via α-terpinyl cation, were detected in P. setoyensis and its related artificial strains, however, no perillaldehyde was detected.
