A comparison of somatic chromosomes at metaphase in Lachenalia (Liliaceae)

Somatic chromosomes at metaphase in 16 species and two varieties of Lachenalia were compared. They showed the chromosome numbers of 2n=14, 16, 23, 28 and 42. The chromosome numbers of the eight species and one variety listed below were reported here for the first time : 2n=14 for L. arbuthnotiae, L. mathewsii, L. pusilla and L. violacea, 2n=16 for L. capensis, L. carnosa (2n=16) and L. splendida ; 2n=23 for L. zeyheri ; and 2n=28 for L. aloides var. vanzyliae. Their karyotypes made the taxa divided into five groups ; the first group of a bimodal chromosome complement either with two long chromosomes for 2n=14 karyotype or with four long chromosomes for 2n=28 karyotype ; the second group of another bimodal chromosome complement with six long chromosomes for 2n=14 karyotype ; the third group of a monomodal chromosome complement displayed a gradual decrease in chromosome size from the largest to the smallest chromosomes for 2n=14 and 42 karyotypes ; the fourth group of another bimodal chromosome complement for 2n=16 karyotype ; and the fifth group of another monomodal chromosome complement displayed a gradual decrease in chromosome size from the largest to the smallest chromosomes for 2n=23 karyotype.
