A chromosome study of three Parnassia species collected in the Qin Ling Mountains, Shaanxi Province, China

Parnassia viridiflora Batalin, P. delavayi Franch. and P. wightiana Wall. collected in Shaanxi Province, China were observed on somatic chromosomes at resting, mitotic prophase and metaphase stages. They had commonly the simple chromocenter type of the resting chromosomes and the proximal type of the mitotic prophase chromosomes. The somatic chromosome numbers of P. viridiflora (2n=18) and P. delavayi (2n=14) were reported here for the first time. The chromosome number of 2n=14 in P. wightiana, that was the smallest number in the genus, counted differed from 2n=36 of the previous report. Parnassia viridiflora and P. wightiana were different in chromosome size from P. delavayi, while P. viridiflora and P. delavayi were different in centromeric position from P. wightiana.
