A karyomorphological comparison of four Saxifraga species collected in the western part of Sichuan Province, China

Saxifraga aculeata Balf. f., S. divaricata Engl. et Irmsch., S. montana H. Smith, and S. cardiophylla Franch. collected in Sichuan Province, China were karyomorphologically studied. They had commonly the simple chromcenter type at resting stage and the proximal type at mitotic prohase chromosomes. The somatic chromosome numbers of S. aculeata (2n=28) and S. divaricata (2n=22) were reported here for the first time. The chromosome numbers of 2n-32 in S. montana studied here verified the previous report but that of 2n=32 in S. cardiophylla studied here differed from 2n=48 of the previous report. Saxifraga aculeata and S. divaricata had very small chromosomes ranged from 1.7-1.0μm and 1.2-0.8μm, respectively, while S. montana and S. cardiophylla had large chromosomes ranged from 4.0-2.0μm and 4.6-2.3μm, respectively. Thus, these four Saxifraga species could be divided into two groups with respect to their characteristics of mitotic metaphase chromosomes.
