Induction of apogamy in twelve fern species and the study of their somatic chromosomes

Apogamy was induced in 12 fern species representing eight different genera. Sporophytes were produced apogamously in two species from gametophytes cultured under light conditions; in four species from cell colonies produced in the dark without the formation of gametophytes; and in six species from spore-origin calli. The somatic chromosome numbers of the apogamously-produced sporophytes were confirmed to be haploid. Some sporophytes produced from calli had diploid chromosome numbers.
