Meiosis of trisomic and tetrasomic sporophytes in Osmunda japonica (Osmundaceae)

An artificially produced trisomic (2n=2x+1=45) and tetrasomic (2n=2x+2=46) sporophytes in Osmunda japonica showed a fertility. A trivalent and a quadrivalent chromosomes were observed in their spore mother cells respectively. From the results of the chromosome numbers in newly produced sporophytes, it was demonstrated that n=22 and n=23 spores might be produced in trisomic sporophytes, while n=22, 23, 24 and 46 might be produced in tetrasomic sporophytes. The spores with 22 and 24 chromosomes might be produced by a 1:3 segregation of one quadrivalent chromosome at meiosis I, and the n=46 spore might be originated from some of the dyads observed in the sporogenesis. Disomic haploid (2n=x+1=23) and trisomic haploid (2n=x+2=24) sporophytes in O. japonica were induced apogamously.
