Chromosomal evolution of three genera in the Betulaceae concerning polyploidy revealed by in situ hybridization using 5S rDNA

5S rDNA amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was in situ hybridized to the somatic chromosomes of 12 species of three genera in the Betulaceae. With the increase of chromosome numbers, the 5S rDNA signals generally increased in number, however, the number of 5S rDNA signals was not simply correlated with ploid levels. A diversity in 5S rDNA signal number was present within the tetraploid or diploid species (2n=28) of Alnus and Betula. Reduction of 5S rDNA signal numbers from four to two might be risen in the species with 2n=28 in the two genera.
