A chromosome study in ten species of Lachenalia (Liliaceae)

Somatic chromosomes in ten species of Lachenalia, Liliaceae were studied. The resting nuclei of L. pustulata studied showed the rod-shaped prochromosome type and those of the other nine species showed commonly the round prochromosome type. The mitotic prophase chromosomes of all the species studied showed commonly the proximal type. Their chromosome numbers were varied from 2n=12, 14, 16, 16+B, 22 to 24. The chromosome number of 2n=12 in L. variegata (2n=12) was reported here for the first time. The ten species of Lachenalia studied were classified karyotypically into six groups.
