Intraspecific polyploidy in Centella asiatica and their karyotypes in five populations in Australia and Japan

Chromosomes of Centella asiatica were investigated in two Australian and three Japanese populations by the conventional aceto-orcein staining method. Two Australian populations, "Mt. Archer" and "Mossman" and one Japanese population, "Omoto" showed the chromosome number of 2n=18 with two satchromosomes that suggested those plants being diploid. In contrast, two Japanese populations, "Shibusawa" and "Shibazaki" showed the chromosome number of 2n=36 with four sat-chromosomes that suggested those plants being tetraploid. This tetraploid cytotype of C. asiatica (2n=36) was reported here for the first time.
