Chromosome studies in chrysanthemum flora of Taiwan : 1. Dendranthema horaimontana(Masam.) S.S. Ying and D. morii(Hayata) Kitam

Dendranthema horaimontana (Masam.) S. S. Ying and D. morii (Hayata) Kitam., both white-rayed, are rare and endemic to Taiwan. The two species were sometimes considered to be conspecific. Both species displayed commonly the complex chromocenter type of interphase nuclei and the interstitial type of mitotic prophase chromosomes. Dendranthema horaimontana had the chromosome number of 2n=18 (diploid) and the karyotype of eight median-, four submedian-, two sat-submedian- and four subterminal-centromeric chromosomes. Dendanthema morii had the chromosome number of 2n=72 (octoploid) and the karyotype of 40 median-, one sat-median-, 17 submedian-, one satsubmedian-, nine subterminal- and four sat-subterminal-centromeric chromosomes, which is reported here for the first time. The present cytotaxonomic approach shows them to be separate species.
