Karyotype stability of Smilacina japonica

Smilacina japonica A. Gray in Japan had the stable chromosome number of 2n=36 and the stable karyotype of 16 median-, ten submedian- and ten subterminal-centromeric chromosomes, while its close relative, S. robusta Makino et Honda had the chromosome number of 2n=36 and the karyotype of 16 median-, eight submedian- and 12 subterminal-centromeric chromosomes. Thus, the karyotypes of S. japonica and S. robusta were very similar to each other with a minor differences in morphology in the 9th and the 18th pairs of chromosomes.
