Fluorescence genomic in situ hybridization identifies reciprocal translocation of somatic chromosomes and origin of extra chromosome by an artificial, intergeneric hybrid between Dendranthema japonica and Tanacetum vulgare

The maternal Dendranthema japonica (2n=18) and the paternal Tanacetum vulgare (2n=18) were artificially, successfully crossed and produced healthy plants of three hybrid strains axenic cultured in vitro and later acclimatized in vivo during the course of investigation. Fluorescence genomic in situ hybridization (FGISH) distinguished between the two parental genomes in the chromosome complement of the F_1 hybrid plants. Some of the F_1 hybrid plants showed an extra chromosome originated from T. vulgare. An F_1 hybrid plant showed a reciprocal translocation between certain somatic chromosomes of D. japonica and T. vulgare, which could occur during the process of somatic cell division after the fertilization without any progress of the meiosis.
