FISH using the biotin labelled pTa71 of 45S rDNA probe on the mitotic chromosomes of five species in Dendranthema showed various numbers and sizes of terminal yellow colored signals : D. horaimontana (2n=18, diploid) had two signals of the 45S rDNA sites, D. indica (2n=36, tetraploid) had 12 signals, D. occidentalijaponense (2n=54, hexaploid) had ten or 18 signals, D. vestita (2n=54, hexaploid) had ten FISH signals and D. morii (2n=72, octoploid) had ten signals. Among the four polyploid species and one diploid species studied here in addition to four tetraploid species and three diploid species previously studied suggested that Dendranthema evolution might be functioned by allopolyploidization.
